Women’s Basketball Suffers 62-60 Heartbreaking Loss at No. 6 Connecticut

The loss snaps the Bluejays six-game winning streak
STORRS, Conn. – The Creighton women's basketball team suffered its first loss in seven games with a 62-60 heartbreaking defeat to No. 6 Connecticut on Wednesday night inside the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion.
The loss drops the Bluejays to 18-7 on the year and 12-5 in BIG EAST play, while Connecticut moved to 23-4 overall and 15-1 in league play.
A back-and-forth battle in the opening quarter saw the Bluejays take early advantages of 8-5 and 13-10 on baskets from juniors Molly Mogensen and Lauren Jensen with 3:27 left in the opening period. The Huskies answered with a trey from Dorka Juhasz and a pair of baskets from Lou Lopez Senechal and Aaliya Edwards to take a 17-15 with 2:04 remaining. Mogensen responded with another three-pointer from the right wing to put Creighton back in front 18-17 with 46 seconds left before Connecticut buried a pair of free throws to take a 19-18 lead into the second quarter.
Junior Jayme Horan gave the Bluejays their fifth lead of the game at 21-19 on a three-pointer from the left wing before the Huskies used an 11-0 run behind baskets from five different players to take a 30-21 advantage with 3:34 left in the half. The Bluejays, however, closed out the second quarter with an 8-1 burst of their own on a layup from freshman Kiani Lockett and a pair of three pointers from Jensen and senior Rachael Saunders to cut the deficit to 31-29 at the break.
The Bluejays came out of the break swings with an 15-3 run giving Creighton a 44-34 lead with 2:47 left in the quarter. Junior Morgan Maly started the run with a three from the left wing, followed by a trey from Saunders and a layup from Jensen. Maly then buried a three from the deep corner before the Bluejays capped off the run with a floater from senior Carly Bachelor and a pair of free throws from Maly. The Bluejays locked in on defense holding the Huskies to just eight points on 3-of-15 shooting (20.0 percent) in the third quarter, taking a 48-39 lead into the final period.
Saunders gave Creighton its largest lead of the game at 50-39 with a her third three of the game with 9:38 remaining in the game. The Huskies responded with a pair of treys from Edwards and Caroline Ducharme to cut the Bluejays lead down to 50-45 with 8:02 left. A pair of free throws from Maly and a three from Jensen gave Creighton a 55-47 (6:15) lead, before an 11-2 spurt gave Connecticut a 58-57 advantage with 1:43 remaining.
Creighton answered with a deep three from Maly as the Bluejays regained a 60-58 advantage with 1:18 to go. The Huskies then tied the game at 60-60 on a jumper from Lopez Senechal with 47 second remain. Following a pair of turnover by the Bluejays, Connecticut drew a foul sending Ducharme to the line for two free throw, where she game the Huskies a 62-60 lead with 4.1 ticks left on the clock. Out of a Creighton timeout, Jensen got a one-on-one opportunity with Edwards drawing a foul on a driving layup with 0.7 left on the clock. After missing the first free throw, Jensen was forced to miss the second in which Connecticut sealed the win with a rebound by Edwards.
Maly led Creighton with 15 points, while Saunders and Jensen each finished with 13 points. As a team, the Bluejays shot 37.9 percent (22-of-58) from the field, including a 12-of-33 (36.4 percent) from three. Connecticut got a game-high 17 points from Lopez Senechal, 12 from Eedwards and 10 each from Juhasz and Ducharme. After being dominated on the boards in the first meeting, Creighton outrebounded the Huskies 39 to 31.
Creighton returns to the hardwood on Saturday, February 18 as the Bluejays host Georgetown in the annual Pink Game at 2:00 p.m.
