Bluejay Baseball Earns 9-4 Win at McNeese

The win evened Creighton's record at 1-1 on the season, while McNeese fell to 1-1.
Trailing 2-0 after one, the Bluejays pulled even with a pair of runs in the third. Senior Andrew Meggs got things started with two down in the third with a double to left. Following a walk to sophomore Nolan Sailors, Lozano drove in his first two runs as a Bluejay with a two-run double to right center.Â
McNeese reclaimed the advantage with a run in the bottom half of the third, then pushed its lead to 4-2 with a run in the fourth.
Creighton pulled even once more in the fifth with two runs on two hits. Senior Sterling Hayes opened the inning with a walk, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Meggs followed with an RBI single to left center. After a single by Sailors put runners at the corners, Lozano lifted a sac fly to center to make it 4-4.
The Bluejays took lead for good in the sixth, plating four runs on two hits, one walk, one hit batter and a sac fly. Senior Jack Grace got things going with a single to right. Moments later Creighton loaded the bases with a walk to Tate Gillen, then Hayes was hit by a pitch. Creighton took the lead on a fielder's choice and an error as Meggs's grounder to first was misplayed. The Bluejay lead moved to 6-4 on a sac fly off the bat of Sailors, then Lozano blasted his second two-run double of the game to make it 8-4.
Lozano delivered once more in the eighth with an RBI single to plate Sailors for his sixth RBI of the contest.
Junior Daniel Hammond picked up the win (1-0) with a scoreless inning of relief, while Cowboy reliever Luke Stewart took the loss (0-1). Stewart allowed four unearned runs on two hits in one frame.
Creighton and McNeese play the rubber game of the series on Sunday, February 19 at 1:00 p.m.
