Women's Basketball Routs Butler on Senior Night as Flanery Wins 400th Game

OMAHA, Neb. -- Jim Flanery picked up his 400th victory and the duo of Carly Bachelor and Rachael Saunders were recognized on Senior Night in Creighton's lopsided 74-46 win over visiting Butler on Monday, Feb. 27.
Flanery, who became the program's all-time winningest coach in 2012 with his 197th triumph, improved to 400-260 in 21 seasons on the Bluejay sideline with the victory. He was recognized by McCormick Endowed Athletic Director Marcus Blossom in a postgame ceremony.
Creighton led for all but 70 seconds and bolted to a 20-8 lead after 10 minutes. The Bluejay defense converted seven Bulldog turnovers into 12 points and turned a 10-0 run to end the first quarter into a 14-0 spurt when Saunders and Morgan Maly scored in the opening minute of the second frame to make it 24-8. That was part of a stretch that saw CU make nine straight field goal attempts.
Undeterred after a Butler three-pointer stopped that run, CU simply started another 9-0 flurry to push the lead to 33-11. The Bluejays took a 38-15 lead into the half, paced by 10 points and three assists by Lauren Jensen and an 18-2 advantage in paint points. CU limited Butler to 5-of-25 shooting from the field in the first half
CU held the Bulldogs without a field goal for the final 8:32 of the third quarter to open up a 60-27 lead heading into the final stanza. The Bulldogs compiled a 12-2 run in the fourth quarter to draw within 25 (64-39). The senior duo of Bachleor and Saunders checked out with 3:07 remaining to a standing ovation and hugs from the sideline.
Jensen led the Bluejays 16 points and added three steals. Ronsiek (13), Maly (11) and Bachelor (10) also scored in double-figures. CU made 47.6 percent of its shots in the victory, outscored Butler 32-14 in the paint and outscored the Bulldogs 24-9 off turnovers.
Anna Mortag recorded 16 of Butler's first 27 points and led BU in scoring. The Bulldogs entered the day sixth nationally in three-point percentage at 38.4 percent but drained just 5-of-18 shots (27.8 percent) from long range on Monday night. The visitors also made just 4-of-18 layup opportunities.
Creighton improved to 21-7 on the season and finished 15-5 in BIG EAST play for the second straight year. Butler, which had its league-leading four-game win streak snapped, fell to 11-18 overall and is 6-14 in BIG EAST action. The Bulldogs will be the No. 8 seed in this weekend's BIG EAST Tournament and open against ninth-seeded Georgetown at 10 a.m. Central on Friday to open the tournament at Mohegan Sun.
The Bluejays return to action on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. Central with a quarterfinal game of the BIG EAST Tournament Presented by JEEP against the winner of Friday night's First Round match-up between sixth-seeded Seton Hall and 11th-seed Xavier. That contest will air on FS2.
