The Bluejays won five single matches in straight sets to claim the victory.
OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton women's tennis team opened the home portion of their schedule with a 6-1 win over former Missouri Valley Conference foe, Bradley on Saturday afternoon at the Hanscom Tennis Center in Omaha.
The Bluejays improved to 4-0 on the year with the win, while the Braves fell to 1-1 overall. It is the first time since 1999 that the Bluejays have started the year 4-0. The Bluejays have also won the last eight meetings against the Braves.
Creighton heated up quickly, earning the doubles point for the first time this season. Junior Malvika Shukla and graduate transfer Leanne Kendall captured a 6-1 victory at the No. 1 doubles position, while junior Bianca Rademacher and sophomore Siri Kongara claimed an identical 6-1 win on the No. 3 doubles court.
The Bluejays clinched the overall dual with five straight set wins in singles play.
Shukla bested Bradley's Mariia Pukhina, 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot, giving Creighton a 2-0 lead in the match. Rademacher then posted a 6-0, 6-3 victory at the No. 5 singles slot, moments before Kongara clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-2 straight-sets win at the No. 6 singles position.
Bradley's only win of the match came at the No. 4 singles slot as Maria Bezmenova knocked off Kendall, 6-2, 6-3. The Bluejays, however, answered with a 6-3, 7-5 win at the No. 2 singles spot by Valerie Negin, pushing the advantage out to 5-1. Freshman Ana Paula Martinez closed the match out for the Bluejays with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the No. 3 slot.
"We played a good match today and I'm proud of how we stepped up this weekend to get two quality wins," said head coach Tom Lilly. "We are not nearly as healthy as we hoped by now and we played both matches without our top player so that makes the effort this weekend that much more special."
Creighton returns to action on Wednesday, February 8 at 12:30 p.m. when they take on Southwest Minnesota State at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
