Softball Drops Series Finale At Villanova, 10-4

VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Creighton softball team fell 10-4 to Villanova during the series finale on Saturday afternoon at the Villanova Softball Complex in Villanova, Pa.
The loss drops the Bluejays to 13-14 on the season and 0-3 in BIG EAST play, while Villanova improved to 13-13 overall and 5-1 in league action with the victory.
Creighton struck first in the top of the first inning as Cayla Nielsen led off the game with a single to right before scoring on an RBI double by freshman Lily West. Junior Alyssa Gappa followed by beating out an infield single before Senior Kailey Wilson followed with an RBI double of her own to make the score 2-0. Senior Saren Croker then delivered an RBI single through the left side of the infield to give Creighton a 3-0 lead.
Villanova answered with a solo home run in the bottom half of the first by Chole Smith, while a two-run home run by Riley Henry in the bottom of the second level the contest at 3-3.
The Bluejays wasted no time regaining the lead as Gappa opened the third with a hit-by-pitch before Wilson reached on an error by the Wildcats center fielder which allowed Gappa to score all the way from first.
The Wildcats responded with four runs in the bottom half of the third to grab a 7-4 lead. Smith and Kelsey White led off the frame with back-to-back single, while a single from Ally Jones loaded the bases for Ava Franz. Franz then reached on an error by the Bluejays scoring Smith from third to even the game at 4-4. Henry followed with a two-run single double the right field line, giving Villanova a 6-4 edge before Victoria Sebastian drove in another run by reaching on a fielder's choice.
Villanova added to its lead with an additional run in the bottom of the fourth as Jones singled and came around to score on an RBI double by Franz to extend the Wildcats advantage out to 8-4. The Wildcats pushed the lead out to 9-4 on an RBI triple by Dani Dabroski in the bottom of the fifth before securing a 10-4 win with an RBI single by Franz in the bottom of the sixth.
West and Croker led the Bluejays with a pair of hits each, while Wilson drove in run on a double of her own. Jena Lawrence (0-2) suffered the loss after allowing seven runs, five earned, on nine hits in 4.2 innings of work. Starter Alexis Wiggins went just 1.1 innings, allowing three runs on four hits.
Creighton returns to action on Wednesday for a game against crosstown rival Omaha. First pitch between the Bluejays and Mavericks is set for 5 p.m. from Connie Claussen Field.
