Jays will open BIG EAST Tournament play on Thursday night
CHICAGO, Ill. - - The Creighton men's basketball team secured its 23rd season of 20 or more wins in the last 25 years with an 84-70 road victory at DePaul on Saturday, March 4, to close the regular-season.
With the win, Creighton (20-11, 14-6 BIG EAST) secured the third seed in next week's BIG EAST Tournament presented by JEEP and will face the winner of Wednesday's Georgetown/Villanova match-up on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. Central on FS1.
In a fast-paced first half, Creighton took an early lead with a 9-0 run as it held the Blue Demons scoreless for over five minutes to go up 11-5. CU maintained a narrow lead until ballooned to 12 after its second 9-0 run of the half that started with back-to-back three-pointers by sophomores Trey Alexander and Ryan Nembhard and continued with scores by Arthur Kaluma and Fredrick King to make it 32-20.
King rescued the Jays after starting center Ryan Kalkbrenner picked up his second foul with 5:05 left in the half and CU ahead 23-19. The freshman center had two three-point plays and finished the first half with nine points on 4-of-5 shooting while adding four rebounds in eight minutes of action. The Jays led 39-24 at the half, paced by 10 points from Nembhard and a 27-17 lead on the glass. Umoja Gibson, who leads DePaul with 16.2 points per game, missed all five field goal attempts and was scoreless at the break.
DePaul needed just eight minutes of second half action to match its first half total of 24 points, making 11-of-14 shots out of the locker room. But Creighton kept pace with 8-of-11 shooting in that same span, including three hoops by Kalkbrenner. A slew of turnovers saw DePaul take advantage, drawing within 59-54 with 10:44 to play to prompt a CU timeout. CU emerged from the timeout with a three-ball by Nembhard and, scores inside from Kalkbrenner and Nembhard and a three-point play by Kaluma as the margin grew back to a dozen at 69-57.
The lead never dipped below nine again.
