Softball Earn Split During Day Two Of THE Spring Games

Madeira Beach, Fla. – The Creighton softball team rallied for a 5-2 win over Holy Cross after falling to Coastal Carolina to earn a split during day two of THE Spring Games on Sunday at the R.O.C Complex in Madeira Beach, Fla.
The Bluejays moved their season record to 9-9 with the split, while Coastal Carolina improved to 17-3 on the year and Holy Cross fell to 3-8.
Creighton dropped Sunday's opener to Coastal Carolina, 3-0.
The Chanticleers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Riley Zana blasted a solo home run over the left center field wall, placing the first dent on the scoreboard.
Coastal Carolina added to its lead in the third inning on a two-run home run from Delaney Keith. Diamond Williams opened the frame with a walk before Keith blasted her third home run of the season to straight away center to give Coastal Carolina a 3-0 lead.
Creighton had multiple chances to cut into the Chanticleers lead as the Bluejays left a pair of runners stranded on base in the bottom of the third and three runners stranded in the fourth but did not score.
Sophomore Alexis Wiggins (2-3) took the loss after allowing three runs on six hits in 4.0 innings of work. Four different Bluejays recorded a hit in the game, while senior Saren Croker reached twice on a single and a walk to lead the Bluejays offense.
After suffering the loss, Creighton bounced back with a 5-2 come-from-behind win over Holy Cross.
The Bluejays trailed 2-0 entering the sixth inning before scoring two in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Holy Cross made things difficult early as starter Sophia Roncone struck out the side in both the first and second innings.
Freshman Natalia Puchino also was fabulous early, tossing three scoreless innings before Holy Cross plated two in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Crusaders' opened the fourth with back-to-back singles from Anna Brait and Ali Sniegocki before a two-run double from Bailey Bates gave Holy Cross a 2-0 lead.
The Bluejays answered with two runs of their own in the top of the sixth inning as junior Madeline Vejvoda led off the frame with a double down the left field line. Senior Kailey Wilson followed with a walk before Gappa advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt. Croker then drew a walk of her own before pinch hitter Ella Dalton delivered an RBI single right back up the middle to put the Bluejays on the scoreboard. Junior Emma Rosonke would then score pinch runner Elliot Smith from third on a sacrifice fly to deep right field.
All tied up headed into the seventh inning, Creighton tacked on a trio of runs to earn the 5-2 win. Freshman Lily West got the Bluejays started with a five-pitch walk, while Vejvoda reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Wilson then lined a single back up the middle, scoring Vejvoda from second to give Creighton a 3-2 lead. Gappa followed with a two-run shot over the right center field wall on the first pitch of her at bat to extend the Bluejays advantage out to 5-2.
Puchino (5-3) tallied two strikeouts while scattering five hits and two runs in 6.0 innings of work. Junior Payton Akers earned her second save of the season, tossing a scoreless seventh.
Gappa finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs on a home run while Vejvoda scored two of the Bluejays runs.
Creighton returns to action at the Madeira Beach R.O.C. Complex on Tuesday for a pair of games. The Bluejays will face LIU at 10 a.m. before facing Southern Indiana at 12:30 p.m. Central.
