Bluejays’ Offense Stifled In Pair Of Losses

Madeira Beach, Fla. – The Creighton softball team suffered a pair of losses to LIU and Southern Indiana on day three of THE Spring Games in Madeira Beach, Florida. The Bluejays fell to LIU, 2-0, before dropping a 4-0 decision to Southern Indiana on Tuesday afternoon.
The pair of losses drops the Bluejays overall record to 9-11.
In game one, junior Cayla Nielsen recorded both of Creighton's hits in the game as LIU's Alyssa O'Donnell and Lindsey Cowans' combined for the two-hit shutout.
The Sharks used three hits, a hit batter and a walk to jump out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. LIU's first three batters reached on a walk, a hit-by-pitch and a single to load the base. Following a fly out, the Sharks got an RBI single from Maya Avila to give LIU a 1-0 advantage.
Freshman Natalia Puchino would settle in and fire four scoreless innings before LIU tacked on an additional run in the top of the sixth inning. Camryn Lyman led off the frame with a single back up the middle, before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt from Gabby Padilla. Lyman would come around to score on an RBI single to right by Sam Garcia to extend the Sharks lead out to 2-0.
Nielsen singled twice and walked once, while senior Kailey Wilson and junior Madeline Vejvoda drew a trio of walks for the Bluejays offense. Puchino (5-4) took the loss after scattering eight hits and two earned runs around five strikeouts and a walk in the complete-game performance.
In game two, Southern Indiana's Josie Newman struck out nine batters while allowing just one hit in the complete-game shutout.
Vejvoda managed the one hit for the Bluejays in the first innings, while Lily West, Alyssa Gappa and Emma Rosonke each recorded a walk. Sophomore Alexis Wiggins (2-4) suffered the loss after allowing three runs on five hits in 5.0 innings of work.
Southern Indiana placed the first dent on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning as the Screaming Eagles soared out to a 2-0 lead. Back-to-back singles by Rachel Martinez and Kennedy Nalley to led off the innings got USI started. Emma Tucher followed with a walk before Mackenzie Bedrick delivered an RBI single to left, scoring Martinez for the first run of the game. Jordan Rager then reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Nalley to come around to score and extend the lead to 2-0.
In the sixth innings, Southern Indiana added a pair of insurance runs as Lexi Fair slapped a two-run home run over the left centerfield wall to secure the 4-0 win for the Screaming Eagles
