Katherine Lemke is tied for sixth place to lead CU
HARDEEVILLE, S.C. -- Defending league champion Katherine Lemke was one of just eight golfers to break 80 on the opening day of the BIG EAST Women's Golf Championships Presented by JEEP on Monday in Hardeeville, S.C. Lemke shot a 79 to help Creighton to fifth place in the team standings after 18 holes.
Lemke led all players with four birdies on Monday en route to a 79 that leaves her in a tie for sixth place. The sophomore from Geneva, Ill., sits just five shots behind Xavier's Emma McMyler, one of two players that she defeated in a playoff last year to earn medalist honors. McMyler leads all BIG EAST players in scoring average (71.75) and wins (4) this season.
Gabby Tremblay tied for 10th place with an 81 on Monday. The Bluejay junior tied for second place at the 2021 BIG EAST Championship.
CU's lone player making her debut in BIG EAST Championship play was freshman Annika Yturralde, who tied for 17th after a round of 83. Yturralde eagled the par-5 second hole, one of just two eagles by the field all day.
Sophomore Eleanor Hudepohl entered the morning leading CU in scoring average and turned in an 85 that left her tied for 22nd place, while senior Katie Allen rounded out the Bluejay lineup with an 87 to tie for 24th place. Allen had a hole-in-one on the par 3 third hole in Sunday's practice round, sinking her second career ace with a seven iron on the 139-yard hole.
Two-time defending champion Xavier owns a 13-shot lead after a 304 total. McMyler fired a 74 to own a one-shot edge over teammate Kara Carter, while Madison Reemsnyder (77) and Abby Kiefer (78) give the Musketeers four of the top five individuals. Georgetown is in second after a 317, while Seton Hall (326), St. John's (327) and Creighton (328) are also in the hunt. Completing the six-team field is Butler, which shot a 349.
Thirty players are competing on the Riverton Pointe Golf and Country Club, which measured 6,190 yards on its par 72 layout.
Round two of the 54-hole tournament begins at 7 a.m. Central on Tuesday morning. The event concludes on Wednesday.
