Lemke looks to go back-to-back as Jays eye first title on Wednesday
HARDEEVILLE, S.C. -- Powered by Katherine Lemke's school and BIG EAST Championship record round of 67, the Creighton women's golf team shot a program-record score of 291 to surge from fifth and into a tie for second place during the second round of the 2023 BIG EAST Women's Golf Championships, Presented by JEEP.
Creighton shaved 27 shots off its first round score as weather conditions improved on Tuesday as the wind subsided. Four different Bluejays fired a round of 76 or better and improved their score by 10 shots or more. CU's 291 was one shot better than its previous best round ever done in the fall of 2021 and matched against last fall. The team effort helped the Bluejays (328-291=619) move past St. John's (327-315=642) and Seton Hall (311-326=637) in the standings and equal to Georgetown (317-302=619) for second with one round to play.
Both the Bluejays and Hoyas are a dozen shots behind three-time defending champion Xavier (304-303=607). The 12 shot lead is formidable, but it's worth noting that Creighton was 12 shots better than the 65th-ranked Musketeers on Tuesday.
Lemke dominated the Riverton Pointe Golf and Country Club course on Tuesday, firing seven birdies and an eagle en route to her 67. That tied the BIG EAST Championship record set by Louisville's Laura Anderson in 2009, and broke Sarah Eversman's school record 68 set on March 14, 2016 at the ORU/SFA Women's Spring Break Invitational.
The sophomore from Geneva, Ill., eagled her second hole and birdied the next to stand 3-under after three holes. Though a bogey and double-bogey in her next three holes returned her to even par, she followed that up with back-to-back-to-back birdies to close her front nine in 33. After a bogey on the 10th hole, Lemke cruised into the clubhouse with birdies on 14, 15 and 17 for her 5-under par round.
Lemke, who won a three-way playoff last season to become Creighton's first BIG EAST golf champion, owns a two-shot lead over Xavier's Emma McMyler as she seeks to become the league's first back-to-back champion ever. The only previous two-time champion was Georgetown's Jacquelyn Eleey, who won the tournament in both 2015 and 2018.
The nation's 68th-best golfer and a four-time champion this season, McMyler owned a multiple-shot lead throughout much of the day before a triple bogey on 16 moved clubhouse leader Lemke into first place. McMyler is alone in second after a second straight 74 while Xavier teammate Abby Kiefer is tied for sixth after rounds of 78 and 77. Both women lost in a playoff to Lemke last season at the BIG EAST Championship.
Creighton freshman Annika Yturralde matched her collegiate best with a 73 and is tied for eighth place at 156. Among league freshmen, only Xavier's Madison Reemsnyder (77-76=153) is also in the top 13.
Like Yturralde, sophomore Eleanor Hudepohl also made a 10 shot improvement from Monday as she shot a 75 to move up to a tie for 14th place at 160. Hudepohl is the third-best sophomore in the field, trailing only Lemke and Xavier's Kara Carter (75-79=154).
Gabby Tremblay is alone in 17th place after shooting a second round 80 to own a 161 aggregate, while Katie Allen made an 11-shot improvement as her 76 ushered her into a tie for 19th place.
Thirty-two players and six teams are competing on the Par 72 course, which measures 6,090 yards.
The final round starts on Wednesday at 7:00 a.m. Central. The three top teams, Xavier, Georgetown and Creighton, will tee off beginning at 7:50 a.m. Central.
