OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton softball team dropped the series opener to Connecticut, 5-1, on Friday afternoon at the Creighton Sports Complex.
With the loss, the Bluejays fell to 18-25 on the season and 4-12 in BIG EAST play, while Connecticut improved to 29-11 overall and 16-3 in league action.
The Huskies jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning as leadoff hitting Lexi Hastings launched a solo home run out to straight away center field to give Connecticut a 1-0 lead.
Following back-to-back one, two, three innings, Connecticut added to its lead with a single run in the top of the fourth inning. A walk, single, fielder's choice and a fielding error loaded the bases for the Huskies before an RBI single by Taylor Zatyk extended the lead to 2-0.
The score would remain 2-0 until Connecticut plated three in the top half of the seventh to take a 5-0 lead. A leadoff walk by Savannah Ring forced a Bluejay change before Hastings blasted her second home run of the game. The Huskies would go on to load the base once more before an RBI walk by Hope Jenkins gave Connecticut a 5-0 advantage.
Creighton's Emma Rosonke would cut into the Huskies lead with a solo home run down the right field line, her sixth home run of the season, to make the score 5-1.
Freshman Natalia Puchino (11-12) suffered the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits but did record six strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work. Rosonke led the Bluejays offense with a 3-for-3 showing, finishing with a single and a home run.
The Bluejays and Huskies will continue their three-game series on Saturday at 2 p.m. Game two's time has been pushed back one hour due to the expected cold temperatures in the early morning.
