Only 10 shots separate top team from 10th place
HARDEEVILLE, S.C. -- The Creighton men's golf team started strong and sits in a tie for sixth place after the opening day of the BIG EAST Men's Golf Championships, Presented by JEEP.
Creighton's five players combined for 14 birdies on the front nine as a group but managed just three as a group on the final nine holes. Seeded sixth entering the championship, the Bluejay team was a tournament-best -4 as a group through 15 holes before that lead evaporated down the stretch. CU had four bogeys on the 16th hole, then three double-bogeys on the par 3 17th hole. The Bluejay team played the final hole in 5-over as well to shoot a 295 team score, two shots better than their season average.
Junior Charlie Zielinski birdied three of his first five holes and was in the top-10 all day long. His 1-under 71 leaves him in a tie for seventh place at the end of Friday. The Omaha native finished third in last year's BIG EAST Championship.
Freshman Grant Feldman made his debut in the BIG EAST Championship with a 74 that included five birdies. He's part of a six-way tie for 21st place.
Tied for 27th after matching 75s were sophomore Owen Mackin and junior Shaun Campbell. Mackin had three birdies on the front nine. Rounding out Bluejay contingent is Tristan Nelko, who sits tied for 48th place after shooting an 80.
Defending champion Seton Hall leads the tournament by four shots over Butler after 18 holes with a 2-under 286. Leading the field with a 3-under 69 are the quartet of Peter Weaver (Villanova), Jack Simon (St. John's), George Fricker (Seton Hall) and David Lally (Seton Hall).
