OMAHA, Neb. – Creighton's Boston Small is one of three male finalists for the 2023 Walter Byers Scholarship, the most elite recognition award bestowed by the NCAA. It's the latest honor for Small, who recently received a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship for his efforts on the course, track and classroom.
As part of his recognition, Small will be awarded a $10,000 scholarship for part-time or full-time graduate study at a university of professional school. Small intends to attend medical school next year at either Creighton or UNMC.
A four-time member of the BIG EAST's All-Academic Team, Small graduated from Creighton Summa Cum Laude with a 4.00 GPA and a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science and Pre-Health Professions with a minor in Biology.
Small currently owns a 4.0 GPA in Business Analytics in graduate school. The St. Joseph, Mo., native has been on the Dean's List all nine semesters at Creighton and a member of Alpha Sigma Nu, the most prestigious Honor Society of Jesuit Institutions of higher education.
Small has competed in 19 cross country races in a Bluejay uniform and has also enjoyed remarkable success on the track. He's second on Creighton's all-time list for the indoor mile, third in the indoor 800, fourth in the outdoor 1,500 and fifth in the outdoor 800.
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage graduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletics and academic achievements, campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership are evaluated. An equitable approach is employed in reviewing an applicant's nomination form to provide all student-athlete nominees an opportunity to receive the graduate award, regardless of sport, division, gender or race. In maintaining the highest broad-based standards in the selection process, the program aims to reward those individuals whose dedication and effort are reflective of those characteristics necessary to succeed and thrive through graduate study.
The NCAA awards up to 126 postgraduate scholarships annually. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are at least in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition. The one-time non-renewable scholarships of $10,000 are awarded three times a year corresponding to each sport season (fall, winter and spring). Each sports season there are 21 scholarships available for men and 21 scholarships available for women for use in an accredited graduate program.
To qualify for the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship program, student-athletes must excel academically and athletically, be in their final year of eligibility and plan to pursue graduate study. Student-athletes must also maintain at least a 3.2 grade point average and be nominated by their institution's faculty athletics representative.
