OMAHA, Neb. – Creighton Men's Soccer has promoted Mitch Kavanagh from a volunteer assistant to the team's assistant coach and technical coordinator, head coach Johnny Torres announced on Monday, July 10th.
Kavanagh has spent the past five seasons as a volunteer assistant at CU, helping the Bluejays to the 2018 BIG EAST title in his first year and a College Cup appearance last fall. All told Creighton has gone 47-30-13 in five seasons with Kavanagh on the sidelines, including a 5-2-0 mark in NCAA Tournament action.
He was a part of the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year in 2018 as the Bluejays claimed their first BIG EAST regular-season title since 2014. The Bluejays have produced the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year four of the five seasons that Kavanagh's been on staff, including 2022 MAC Hermann Trophy winner Duncan McGuire.
"He brings a wealth of experience," said Torres. "The players can relate to him in that he's not too far removed from the actual playing days. He's coached at a youth level and he's coached at a collegiate level, which are two advantages to having him around and to bridge the gap between the head coach and the current student-athletes. The players respect and trust him, and so do we as staff, so we're delighted that we were able to get him onboard."
Kavanagh is excited to move into his newly-created role. "I'm really happy to come into a full-time environment here at Creighton. We've had some really successful seasons and I'm looking forward to doing more to push that on. I'm very thankful to the department, to Johnny and to Marcus Blossom for allowing this position to happen and put me in it."
Before working at Creighton Kavanagh spent three seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Bellevue University. He played for the Bruins in 2012 and 2013, earning First Team All-Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference honors in 2012. Kavanagh appeared in 31 games during his career as a defender, scoring one goal and adding two assists.
He will continue to serve the Director of Coaching at Gretna Elite Academy in an overview capacity.
Kavanagh earned his Bachelor's in Health and Human Performance and his Master's in Human Services with Emphasis in leadership. He and his wife, Kayla, reside in Omaha with their two children, Makenna and Jaxson.
