Women’s Soccer Alum Gabriela Guillén Named to Costa Rican National Team; Will Compete in FIFA Women’s World Cup

OMAHA, Neb. – Former Creighton Women's Soccer defender Gabriela Guillén has been selected as part of the 23 players who will represent Costa Rica in the upcoming 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in New Zealand later this month.
Making her second World Cup trip, Guillén and her Costa Rican squad will open Group C play on July 21 at 2:30 a.m. (CT) against Spain, before battling Japan on July 26 at 12:00 a.m. (CT). Costa Rica will close out group play on July 31 against Zambia at 2:00 a.m. (CT). All three games will be televised and can be seen on FS1.
Costa Rica is currently ranked 36th in the world according to FIFA, while Spain ranks sixth, Japan ranks 11thand Zambia ranks 77th in the world.
In 2015, Guillén became the first Bluejay to participate in the FIFA World Cup as the San Jose, Costa Rica native played in one match against Spain with the Costa Rican National Team. Guillén also helped the Costa Rica Women's National Football Team to a silver medal at the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games. Later that same year, she was called up to play with Costa Rica in 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup qualification matches, but Costa Rica failed to qualify.
In total, Guillén has made 13 starts, scoring one goal and dishing out one assist in 25 career matches over the course of her 11-year career.
As a Bluejay, Guillén appeared in 64 matches, making 38 starts over four seasons from 2009-12. She scored one goal and dished out six assists while playing 3,696 minutes on the Bluejays' backline. As a sophomore, Guillén helped lead Creighton to a 15-4-2 overall record, securing the Bluejays' second MVC regular-season championship. The Bluejays went on to win their fifth MVC Tournament Title and advance to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in program history.
