Bluejays will play three games during trip from Aug. 3-9
OMAHA, Neb. – In just under two weeks the Creighton men's basketball team will take a trip to the Bahamas, where it will play three games in addition to gaining invaluable opportunities to bond and grow closer off-the-court while experiencing life in a different culture.
The Bluejays depart for the island on August 3rd and take the floor for the first time one day later in a 5 p.m. Central game against Bahamas Select. Two days later on August 6th at 10 a.m. Central the Bluejays will square off against Lithuanian team BC Zalgiris Kaunas. Creighton plays its final game on August 8th in a 10 a.m. Central contest against Argentinian team Obras Basket. Each contest will be held inside the Imperial Ballroom of the Atlantis Resort, site of the annual Battle 4 Atlantis event each November.
Each contest will be abide by FIBA rules, which means there will be a different ball, four quarters that are 10 minutes in length, a shorter shot clock, a longer three-point line and the ability to goaltend the ball after it hits and rim, among other changes from what the NCAA uses.
All three games will be video webcast by FloHoops and feature announcers to accompany an elevated one-camera feed from midcourt. Detailed information about FloHoops, including discounts, subscription and cancellation details, can be found at http://GoCreighton.com/flosports, with links available on the men's basketball schedule page. Creighton fans who have an active subscription to FloVolleyball, FloBaseball, FloSoftball and FloFC (Soccer) will be able to access the games, and likewise, the FloHoops subscription also will work for upcoming Bluejay contests in those sports. In lieu of live stats, a box score will be published on http://GoCreighton.com with a game summary after each contest. The FloSports landing page for its BIG EAST-related offerings can be found at https://flosports.link/3vF4kul.
NCAA teams are allowed one foreign tour every four years, and this will be the program's fourth summer excursion under Bluejay head coach Greg McDermott. McDermott enters his 14th year on the Creighton sideline having previously taken teams to the Bahamas (2011), Italy (2015) and Australia (2019). Notably, Creighton's 2011-12 and 2019-20 teams both won regular-season league titles in the season immediately after their trips.
In addition to 10 extra practices during the summer, CU will also benefit from the ability to evaluate its incoming transfers and freshmen in game situations, rather than waiting until the team's Nov. 3 exhibition game vs. Wayne State.
Creighton won't be the only college team in the Bahamas in August, as Iowa State, Furman, Texas A&M, LSU, Xavier and South Carolina will also be in the Bahamas for various parts of CU's trip and play several of the same opponents.
One of seven schools with a win in each of the last three NCAA Tournaments, Creighton went 24-13 last season and reached the Elite Eight. The Bluejays bring back eight returnees, including three starters, to the floor in 2023-24.
