LINCOLN, Neb. – The Creighton men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to Nebraska on Saturday afternoon inside the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center in Lincoln, Neb.
The loss drops the Bluejays to 1-1, while the Cornhuskers improved to 2-0 following a pair of victories on Saturday.
"Credit to Nebraska. They have a lot of depth on their team, and they simply outplayed us today," said head coach Gerhard Posch. "We will continue to work on aspects without our control and get a lot better."
The Cornhuskers earned the first point of the match, claiming victories on the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles courts.
Nebraska continued to control the match throughout singles play as the Bluejays fell in each of the six singles matches. Senior Matthew Lanahan and sophomore Zachary Kuo delivered the strongest performance for Creighton, forcing their opponents to three sets.
After dropping the first set, 6-4, Lanahan flipped the script and claimed a 6-4 victory in set two. In the decisive 10-point tiebreaker Lanahan overcame an early deficit and held match point at 10-9 before Nebraska's Calvin Mueller won the final three games to earn a 12-10 third set victory at the top singles position.
Kuo dropped his opening set to Nebraska's Lars Johann, 6-1, before responding with a 7-6 (7-3) victory in set number two. Set three saw both players trade the first eight points before Johann erupted for a 10-6 victory at the No. 3 singles slot.
The Bluejays return to action on Saturday, January 20 when they host the Air Force at 6:30 p.m. at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
