Bluejay defense shines in fourth quarter
Omaha, Neb. -- No. 21 Creighton held Seton Hall scoreless for more than eight minutes in the fourth quarter, relying on defense to earn a hard-fought 57-49 win over rival Seton Hall on Sunday, January 28.
Creighton's sixth straight win moved the Bluejays to 16-3 and alone in second place with a 7-2 BIG EAST record at the halfway point. Seton Hall fell to 12-8 overall and 4-5 in league play while alternating wins and losses for the seventh straight contest.
Creighton trailed much of the first quarter before a traditional three-point play from Emma Ronsiek gave the hosts a 15-13 lead after 10 minutes. The senior hybrid scored eight more points during a 13-3 run to open the second quarter. Lauren Jensen buried a pair of three pointers before halftime as CU took a 33-24 lead into the intermission. Ronsiek had 13 points at the break to lead all players, while Azana Baines had nine of the Pirates' 11 points in the second quarter to lead Seton Hall at the break.
The Bluejays took their largest lead of the game (36-24) early in the third quarter before a 10-0 Seton Hall run in a span of 2:17 drew the Pirates within two. Lay-ups from Ronsiek and Morgan Maly, and a Maly pull-up jumper squashed the rally as the lead quickly returned to eight at 42-34 (3:51). Seton Hall scored the final five points of the third quarter, including three free throws from Savannah Catalon with 0.1 left, to draw within 47-43 with 10 minutes to play.
The Bluejay defense held Seton Hall off the scoreboard for more than seven minutes, but during that same window both Jensen and Ronsiek picked up their fourth personal fouls. Seton Hall missed their initial 14 shots of the fourth quarter and Creighton salted the game away at the free throw line down the stretch. The Pirates first field goal of the final quarter didn't come until a Baines basket with 19.2 seconds left. Maly sank two at the line with 16.5 ticks left, extending the Bluejay edge to 56-47 to hold off the visitors.
Seton Hall finished the final frame 1-for-17 from the field.
Ronsiek led Creighton with 18 points, while Jensen had 16 and Maly added 16. Creighton won the rebound battle 40-39 and blocked eight shots as part of a defensive effort that held the Pirates to 27.6 percent shooting from the field.
Baines paced the Pirates with 19 points after a scoreless first quarter.
Creighton returns to the court on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. when it hosts Marquette.
