Bluejays improve to 15-2 overall
QUEENS, N.Y. -- Just as it did in last year's BIG EAST Tournament final, No. 6 Creighton Volleyball swept St. John's on Saturday afternoon inside Carnesecca Arena in Queens, N.Y. Scores of the match were 25-18, 25-10, 25-20.
Elise Goetzinger hit a season-high .611 and led Creighton (15-2, 6-0 BIG EAST) with 11 kills, while Norah Sis had 10 kills, eight digs and three aces. Creighton hit .409 in the win, outblocked St. John's 9-5.5 and owned an 8-1 lead in aces. No Bluejay attacker had more than 19 swings in the win.
"I thought that was the best we've been on first contacts for a while. Our passing and our serving was really good. We made a really good team struggle because of our serving." said Creighton head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. "They got off to a lead in the third, but we stayed composed and I liked how we regrouped and came on strong at the second half of the third set."
Creighton used a 5-0 run on Sydney Breissinger's serve to build a 13-7 lead in the opening set, with Goetzinger playing a major role. The fifth-year middle blocker had two kills and a pair of blocks to help CU create some separation. Goetzinger had five kills and three blocks for a Bluejay squad that hit .357 and never trailed in the opener. CU had also had six blocks, including one on set point by Kiara Reinhardt and Kendra Wait, to overcome a Red Storm squad led by five kills from Erin Jones.
A 6-0 run on Ava Martin's serve early in the second frame helped vault the Bluejays to an 8-2 lead that saw the Johnnies burn both timeouts. CU's margin grew to 13 (19-6) before cruising to a 25-10 win. CU hit .500 with 15 kills in 26 swings and served five aces in the game.
St. John's (13-7, 2-4 BIG EAST) took its first lead of the match on a kill by Jones to initiate the third set and used that momentum to move in front by as much as 9-4. The Bluejays got strong play from Martin to tie the score at 13-all and took the lead at 15-14 on an attack error by Jones. CU's lead eventually reached four (21-17) before closing out the contest on a Red Storm service error. Martin had seven of Creighton's 18 kills in the finale and four of the club's 13 digs. The five-point deficit overcome by Creighton in the third set was its largest comeback in any set all season.
St. John's was led by 13 kills from Jones. The Red Storm finished with 31 kills, 29 digs, and hit .195.
Creighton returns home next weekend for a pair of matches, starting with Friday's 6 p.m. match against Xavier that will be televised by Nebraska Public Media.
