OMAHA, Neb. - Driven by late second half penalty kick goal from sophomore Anja Jestrovic and a stellar performance in goal from junior Alyssa Zalac, the Creighton women's soccer team seized a 1-0 victory over Providence to move into sole possession of third-place in the BIG EAST standings on Sunday, Oct. 13.
With the win, the Bluejays improved to 6-5-1 on the season and 3-3-0 in BIG EAST play, while Providence dropped to 5-7-1 overall and 2-3-0 in league play.
Battling nearly 25-30 mph wind gusts, neither team was able to push across a goal in the opening 45 minutes of play. Despite owning a 9-2 advantage in shots in the first half, the Bluejays were unable to capitalize on early offensive opportunities in the attacking third.
Creighton soared out of the gates, firing off six shots in the first 15 minutes of the contest. Senior Azumi Manriki provided the most dangerous scoring opportunity for the Bluejays, striking the crossbar on a looping shot on goal from roughly 25 yards out narrowly giving Creighton a 1-0 lead. The Creighton offense controlled possession for 58% of the first half but headed into the locker room locked in a scoreless battle.
Following a slow start offensively out of the locker room, senior Bluejay Stella Downing nearly broke the scoreless tie in the 60th minute as she launched a rocket to the top right of the goal from just inside the box, but was denied in a leaping save from Providence's backup goalkeeper, Ellie Thallman.
Creighton, however, finally broke through in the 76th minute of play, capitalizing on the best opportunity of the match as Jestrovic drew a foul within the box, resulting in a penalty kick attempt. Jestrovic took advantage of the rare opportunity and shot a laser to the left side of the net (75:48) for her second goal of the season, giving Creighton a 1-0 lead.
The Bluejays' defense strengthened in the final minutes of the contest and held on for the 1-0 victory. Despite Creighton earning the shutout victory, Providence finished the match with a 13-11 advantage in shots while drawing even in corner kicks, 4-4.
Zalac impressed throughout the contest collecting six massive save to earn her sixth win of the season and her fifth shutout of the season. The Friars goalkeeping duo combined for two saves in the contest while Thallman recorded the loss, falling to 1-2-1 on the year.
