OMAHA, Neb. - A late second half goal by Azumi Manriki in the 86th minute earns Creighton women's soccer a 2-2 draw against Butler in the regular season home finale on Sunday, Oct. 27 at Morrison Stadium. Despite the draw, the Bluejays clinched a top four finish in the BIG EAST and will host the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since joining the league in 2013 and the first time since hosting the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in 2012.
With the draw, the Bluejays remained in third place in the BIG EAST standings, moving to 8-5-2 overall and 5-3-1 in BIG EAST play, while the Bulldogs moved into a tie for fourth place in the league standings with a 9-4-4 overall record and a 4-2-3 mark in league action.
Down 2-1 with less than five minutes remaining and the Bluejays pushing forward, the Jays pulled out some late game heroics as Manriki delivered the equalizing goal in the 86th minute (85:39) to level the match at 2-2. A failed clearance by the Bulldogs back line set the game-tying goal into motion as Manriki recovered the loose ball at the top of the 18-yard box and blasted a rocket past the diving Bulldog goalkeeper to help claim a critical point for the Bluejays.
Following heavy defensive play from both teams in the opening 44 minutes of the match, Creighton broke through in the 45th minute (44:05) with the first career goal from sophomore Mallory Connealy. With time expiring in the first half, freshman Anna Bragg stole the ball from a Butler attacker in the midfield and sparked a counterattack before delivering a pass beautifully to Connealy, who sprinted past the Butler defense to hammer home her first goal of the season to give Creighton the lead at the break, 1-0.
Creighton stormed out of the locker room and continued to pressure the Bulldogs in the early moments of the second period, recording three corner kicks and two shots that nearly connected with the back of the net in the first seven minute of the second half.
Minutes after the Bluejays' offensive outburst, Butler leveled the contest at 1-1 in the 56th minute (55:19) as junior forward Leila Lister chipped in the equalizer after receiving a pass into the center of the box from senior Sara Trandji.
Nine minutes later, Butler's front line struck again and took a 2-1 advantage as Emily O'Malley dished a pass to Amelie Darey along the fall sideline before delivering a perfect cross over the hands of Zalac, leading to a header by Abigail Isger in the center of the six-yard box to set up the dramatic finish.
The Bluejays finished the match with a 10-8 edge in shots and a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks created, while both goalkeepers collected two saves each.
Remaining in sole possession of third place in the BIG EAST, Creighton returns to the pitch for their regular season finale on Thursday, Oct. 31 at 6 p.m. for a Halloween match at St. John's.
