QUEENS, N.Y. – Although the Creighton women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision at St. John's on Thursday night in Queens, N.Y., the Bluejays have earned the No. 4 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament and will host fifth-seeded UConn on Sunday afternoon at Morrison Stadium in Omaha, Neb.
The loss closed Creighton's regular season at 8-6-2 overall and fourth in the BIG EAST with a 5-4-1 record, while St. John's finished their season with 6-7-5 record and a 1-6-3 mark in the BIG EAST.
The Bluejays controlled possession throughout the first 25 minutes of play, with senior Lara Kazandjian nearly giving the Bluejays a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute. Receiving a pass at the right side of the 18-yard box from freshman Anna Bragg, Kazandjian fired a shot on goal toward the far post, but a diving save by St. John's goalkeeper Kayla Bower kept the Bluejays off the scoreboard.
St. John's countered in the closing moments of the opening frame as a failed clear by the Bluejays back line gave a one-on-one scoring opportunity for Jordyn Levy. A heavy touch, however, allowed Bluejay netminder Alyssa Zalac to leave her line and smother the shot attempt to keep the match scoreless at the break.
Coming out of the locker room locked in a scoreless battle, Creighton upped its offensive pressure and once again nearly took a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute on a shot off the crossbar from Kazandjian.
The Red Storm, however, put together a countered attack off a Creighton free kick, allowing Nora Basile to net the decisive goal in the 61st minute of play (60:02). Receiving a pass from Emily Riggins to the top of the 18-yard box, Basile turned and lofted a shot over the outstretched reach of Zalac to give St. John's a 1-0 lead.
The Bluejays pushed to find an equalizer throughout the remaining of the match, but the Red Storm's back line fended off ever scoring opportunity to secure the 1-0 victory.
Creighton finished the match with a 9-7 advantage in shots and an 8-4 edge in corner kicks, while Zalac collected three saves in goal.
The Bluejays will return home and will host the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time in program history on Sunday, Nov. 3 as they welcome in fifth-seeded UConn for a 1 p.m. match at Morrison Stadium
