OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton women's soccer team ended its season, falling to Connecticut, 2-0, on Sunday, Nov. 3 in the BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinals.
The loss ended the Jays' 2024 season at 8-7-2, while the fifth-seeded Huskies moved to 11-4-4 on the season and advances to play top-seeded Georgetown in the BIG EAST Tournament Semifinals next week in Boyds, Md.
Both of UConn's goals came in the opening 45 minutes as the Huskies controlled possession and closed the opening period with a 6-4 advantage in shots.
The Huskies pulled ahead in the 10th minute (9:26) when Lucy Cappadona headed home her third goal of the season after a free kick from Anna Carson that deflected off the far post to give UConn a 1-0 lead.
UConn continued to press the Bluejays offensively throughout the remainder of the first half, finding the back of the net once again in the 39th minute (38:45). A failed clear attempt by the Bluejays back line set UConn's Chioma Okafor up with an open shot in the middle of the six-yard box. Okafor took advantage of the open space and lasered a shot into the back of the net to extend the Huskies lead out to 2-0 with her conference leading 12th goal of the season.
Trailing 2-0 coming out of the break, Creighton seemed to relax and began to assert themselves in the attacking third. Senior Ariana Mondiri nearly put the Jays on the scoreboard in the first minute of the second half, rifling a shot past the UConn' goalkeeper but right into Huskie defender.
Less than 30 second later, a header from senior Maddie Radke snuck through the Huskies backline and deflected off the post before a UConn defender was able to once again able to clear the scoring opportunity for the Bluejays.
Creighton continued to pepper UConn's Kaitlyn Mahoney in goal as senior Azumi Manriki and junior Jess Torres each blasted shots on frame but were each denied by diving saves of Mahoney.
Despite the loss, Creighton outshot UConn 13-8 in the match, including a 9-2 edge in the second half. The Bluejays also held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks created.
