SAN MARCOS, Texas --Â A five-run fifth inning guided the Creighton softball team to a 5-2 victory over UTSA on Saturday night during the second day of the Texas State Tournament in San Marcos, Texas.Â
Â
With the win the Bluejays improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Roadrunners fell to 0-5 overall.Â
Â
Creighton's Natalia Puchino earned her second win of the season after allowing just one run on three hits while striking out six batters in five innings of work. Junior transfer Kenzie Schopfer also struck out four batters and allowed just two hits and one unearned run in two innings of work.Â
Â
Redshirt freshman transfer Kaelan Schultz lead the Bluejays offense with a pair of hits, including a go-ahead RBI double in the victory.Â
Â
Locked into a pitcher's duel midway through the contest, UTSA broke through with a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning by Kylie Forney to give the Roadrunners a 1-0 lead.Â
Â
The Roadrunners lead, however, didn't last long as the Bluejays plated five runs in the bottom half of the fifth to claim a 5-1 advantage. Fifth-year senior Cayla Nielsen got the Bluejays started with a two-out walk and came around to score on an RBI single up the middle by sophomore Lily West to level the contest at 1-1.Â
Â
Creighton then took its first lead of the game as Schultz lined her first career RBI double into the left center field gap to give the Jays a 2-1 lead. The Bluejays lead grow to 3-1 moments later when Schultz crossed home as freshman Sydney Potter reached on a UTSA throwing error. Creighton then used a single by Madeline Vejvoda and a walk by Alyssa Gappa to load the bases before back-to-back bases loaded walks by Ella Dalton and Ashten Pierson pushed the lead out to 5-1.Â
Â
UTSA would not go away though, cutting into the Bluejays lead with a run in the top of sixth inning. After back-to-back singles by Taylor Jensen and Sophie Campbell to open the inning, Schopfer struck out a pair of batters, before a fielding error by Nielsen allowed a run to cross the plate to cut the deficit down to 5-2.Â
Â
Following a scoreless sixth at the plate by the Bluejays, Schopfer closed the game by retiring the side in order in the seventh to secure the 5-2 win.Â
