SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Creighton softball team closed out its stay at the Texas State Tournament with a 2-1 over Kennesaw State before falling, 5-4, to Texas State on Sunday afternoon.
The Bluejays ended the opening weekend with a 3-2 record, while the Owls fell to 2-2 overall and Bobcats improved to 5-2.
The opener saw the Bluejays hold KSU to just three hits and take advantage of four Owl errors as Creighton opened the day was a 2-1 victory.
Creighton got things started early with a single run in the top of the second inning as senior Madeline Vejvoda lined a single to center and came around to score on an RBI single down the left field line by sophomore Mikayla Chairez for the Bluejays first run of the game.
Kennesaw State answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the third on a two-out RBI double by Ty Hardeman to tie the game at 1-1.
The game remined tied at 1-all heading into the seventh, where the Bluejays used a pair of Owl errors and a single by senior Cayla Nielsen to load the bases with only one out. Redshirt freshman transfer Kaelan Schultz then delivered the game-winning RBI sacrifice fly to center to help secure the Bluejays' 2-1 win.
Creighton's pitching dominated in the circle down the stretch, limiting the Owls to one hit over the final four innings as junior Alexis Wiggins picked up her first win of the season. Senior starter Jena Lawrence allowed just one run on two hits in 2.2 innings of work, while Wiggins tossed 4.1 scoreless frames while strikeout four and allowing just one hit.
Vejvoda led the Bluejays offense with a pair of hits and a run scored, while Chairez and Nielsen each recorded a hit of their own in the victory.
The second game saw the Bluejays soar out to a 4-0 lead, scoring all four runs with two outs in the top of the first inning, before Texas State rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to claim a 5-4 come-from-behind victory.
Creighton used four hits, including RBI singles from Vejvoda and Alyssa Gappa, as well as an RBI double from Chairez to claim a 4-0 lead after a half inning of play.
Texas State answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the first on a walk by Ciara Trahan, a Creighton fielding error and a fielder's choice to cut the deficit down to 4-1.
Both team's pitchers would settle in over the next four innings before Texas State added a single run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by Sara Vanderford to make the score 4-2.
Down to their final three-outs, Texas State used a four-pitch walk by Sydney Harvey and a bunt single by Hannah Earls to place runners on first and second with no outs. Trahan's then blasted an RBI single back up the middle to make it a one run game and force a Creighton pitching change. Following the pitching change, Karmyn Bass lined a walk-off two-run single into left to give the Bobcats a 5-4 come-from-behind victory.
Schultz and Vejvoda once again led the Bluejays offense with two hits apiece, while the team finished with eight total hits. Freshman Brooke Shifflett suffered her first loss of the season, while Kenzie Schopfer allowed five runs on six hits in 6.0 innings of work.
Creighton returns to the field next weekend when it travels to the Sunshine State to open play at the Hatter Classic on Feb. 16 against Bethune-Cookman at 8:30 a.m. in DeLand, Fla.
