DELAND, Fla. -- Winners in six of their last seven games, the Creighton softball team used early momentum to claim a 3-2 victory over Colgate during the second day of the Hatter Classic in DeLand, Fla. Â
Â
The win pushed the Bluejays to 6-2 on the year, while Colgate fell to 3-6 overall with the loss.Â
Â
Creighton gained control early as the Bluejays jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning. Senior Cayla Nielsen got things started with an infield single to open the game, while Lily West was hit by a pitch and Kaelan Schultz drew a walk to load the bases. Senior Alyssa Gappa then drew a bases loaded walk and Madeline Vejvoda delivered an RBI sacrifice fly to give the Jays a 2-0 advantage.Â
Â
After a pair of scoreless innings, the Raiders would cut the Jays lead in half with a single run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single from Quinn Livesay.Â
Â
The Bluejays, however, pushed their lead back out to two in the bottom half of the fourth. Ella Dalton drew a walk to open the frame, while advancing to second on a single by freshman Ashten Pierson. Nielsen then lined an RBI single down the left field line to give the Jays a 3-1 lead.
Â
The Raiders would not go away though, adding another run in the top of the fifth. Kiley Shelton beat out an infield single, while a walk by Kara Fusco put runners on first and second. Adrienne Nardone then laced an RBI single up the middle to cut the deficit to 3-2.Â
Â
Sophomore Natalia Puchino would enter the game in the circle for the Bluejays and proceed to fire 2.1 hitless innings to pick up her second save of the season.Â
Â
Creighton was led offensively by Nielsen with a pair of hits, an RBI and a run scored, while Pierson collected the first multi-hit game of her career. Senior Jena Lawrence picked up her second win of the season, tossing 1.2 innings, while starter Alexis Wiggins allowed just one run on three hits in three innings of work.
Â
With rain in the DeLand area, the Bluejays afternoon contest with Stetson was postponed. Creighton will wrap up its stay in the Sunshine State on Sunday with a contest against Colgate at 9 a.m. Creighton and Stetson will then try to make-up their contest, if time permits.Â
