Bluejay Women's Hoops Outlasted by #15 Connecticut, 73-53

Hartford, Conn. -- Deadlocked at 31-31 with No. 15 Connecticut at the half, the 20th ranked Creighton Bluejays fell to the Huskies 73-53 on Monday, February 19.
The loss snapped the Bluejays 11-game win streak, moving Creighton to 21-4 on the season and 12-3 in BIG EAST action, while Connecticut climbed to 22-5 overall and 15-0 in conference play.
The Bluejays traded baskets with Connecticut throughout the opening frame as neither team held an edge larger that three points in the period. After Morgan Maly gave Creighton a 17-15 with the opening bucket of the second quarter, Connecticut struck the first blow with an 8-0 run. The Huskies pushed their lead to eight points at 31-23 with 3:21 left, but the Bluejays countered with the final eight points of the half. Senior Emma Ronsiek started Creighton's flight with a traditional three point play, then a free throw from Morgan Maly on a technical foul, then Maly and Molly Mogensen pulled the Bluejays even with consecutive buckets.
Creighton opened the second half with a turn around jumper from Lauren Jensen, followed by a three-pointer banked in by Maly to take a 36-31 lead (8:58). The Huskies, however, responded with 17 consecutive points and outscored the Bluejay 27-5 over the final nine minutes to grab a 58-41 advantage heading into the fourth
Jensen led Creighton with 18 points, while Maly finished with 16 points. Four Huskies finished in double figures, led by 24 points from Paige Bueckers, while Aaliyah Edwards also delivered 20 points.
The Bluejays return to the hardwood on Saturday, February 24 as Creighton hosts Villanova at 11:00 a.m. on FOX in D.J. Sokol Arena.
