Baseball Remains Flawless in 2024 with 4-1 Win Over UTSA

Sugar Land, Texas - Led by another strong pitching performance, Creighton Baseball moved to 4-0 on the season with a 4-1 win over UTSA in the second game for both teams at the Sugar Land Classic on Saturday, February 24.
While the Bluejays moved to 4-0, UTSA fell to 3-4 on the season.
Freshman Connor Capece got the Bluejays rolling with a leadoff double in the third. The Omaha native moved to third via a sacrifice bunt from Tate Gillen and scored on a wild pitch. Teddy Deters followed with a solo home run to push Creighton out to a 2-0 lead. With two down in the frame, Jack Grace doubled to right, then Will MacLean drove him home with a single up the middle.
The Roadrunners scratched across a run with a two-out double from Mason Lytle and an RBI single by Caleb Hill in the fifth, but the Bluejays answered with a run in the eighth. Creighton's final tally came via a single from Nolan Clifford, a sac bunt by Matt Scherrman and an RBI pinch-hit single from Colby Canales.
Bluejay starter Jimmy Burke earned his first Creighton win (1-0), limiting the Roadrunners to one run on five hits over five innings. Zach Royse took the loss (0-1) for UTSA, surrendering three runs on seven hits over four innings.
Creighton's bullpen tandem of Shane Curtin and Mason Koch nailed down the win with four shutout innings of relief. Koch notched his first save for the Bluejays, getting the final four outs in the game.
Creighton wraps up play in the Sugar Land Classic on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. against UIC.
