Bluejays open spring in West Palm Beach
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- The Creighton men's golf team opened its spring season on Monday by splitting a pair of matches at the BIG EAST Match Play Championships in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Creighton defeated eighth-seeded St. John's 4-1 (with two ties) in its first match of the day before the top-seeded Bluejays fell 4-1 (with 2 ties) in the semifinal round against fifth-seeded Connecticut.
Owen Price (2-0-0) and Grant Feldman (1-0-1) each were undefeated on the day, and all seven Bluejays either tied or won at least one match.
Creighton 4, St. John's 1 (2 ties)
Creighton began with the day with a win over St. John's, but it wasn't easy after falling behind on the first hole in three of the initial four matches.
Junior Cole Davis lost three of the first four holes and needed to win the last hole to earn a tie. Classmate Jake Boor fell into a tie after losing the 17th hole, only to bounce back to win the 18th hole and take his match, 1 UP.
Jackson Thompson tied his match on 15 and used a birdie on 17 to earn a 1 UP victory. Freshman Owen Price won holes 5, 7 and 8 to take an early three-hole lead, only to have Erik Stevens tie it up. Price birdied the 16th to take a lead and give CU its third consecutive 1 UP triumph.
Creighton clinched the match with a 2 UP win by sophomore Grant Feldman. He took the lead for good with a birdie on No. 10, then clinched his 2 & 1 victory with a birdie on 17 as Creighton went ahead 4-1. That would prove beneficial as Charlie Zielinski never led in a 5 & 4 loss. Shaun Campbell never trailed in his match at No. 1 singles, but had to settle for a draw.
Creighton closes the competition on Tuesday morning when it faces off against third-seeded Xavier. The Musketeers defeated Villanova (5-2) before losing to Seton Hall (5-1-1).
