Women’s Tennis Falls To Drake, 4-3, in Marathon Match
3/1/2024 5:15:00 PM | Women's Tennis
OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton women's tennis team battled for nearly three and a half hours before dropping a 4-3 decision to Drake on Friday afternoon inside the Hanscom Tennis Center.
The loss moves the Bluejays record to 5-4 on the year, while the Bulldogs improved to 4-5 overall with the victory.
Due to Drake only having five health players, the Bulldogs were forced to forfeit the No. 3 doubles and the No. 6 singles matches, give Creighton early advantages. This helped the Bluejays take an early 1-0 lead, as Creighton used the forfeit and a 6-4 victory by senior Malvika Shukla and junior Valerie Negin at the top doubles position to secure the first point of the match.
After taking a 2-0 lead with the forfeit on singles court No. 6, Creighton quickly pushed its advantage to 3-0 when junior Siri Kongara claimed a 6-3, 6-2 straight-sets win at the No. 3 singles position.
Drake, however, answered with a 6-4, 6-3 straight-sets win at the No. 1 singles position to cut the deficit to 3-1 and start the Bulldogs rally. Drake would then capture victories on the No. 2 and No. 5 singles courts to level the match at 3-3.
With the match still up for grabs, the Bluejays and Bulldogs battled it out on the No. 4 singles court. Sophomore Annika Elvestrom opened the match with a 7-5 win in set one but suffered a 6-1 setback in the second frame. In the decisive third set, Elvestrom fell behind 4-1 but clawing back to within one at 5-4 before falling to Drake's Darinka Stepan, 6-4.
Creighton will return to the courts when they start BIG EAST play on March 5 against Seton Hall at the USTA Tennis Center in Orlando, Fla.
