OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton women's tennis junior Valerie Negin (Centennial, Colo.) has earned BIG EAST Female Singles Player of the Week honors, while Negin and senior Malvika Shukla (Mumbai, India) were named the BIG EAST Female Doubles Team of the Week, the league announced on Monday afternoon.
This marks just the second BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week and the first BIG EAST Doubles Team of the week honors in Negin's career, while this is the fourth career BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week acclaim for Shukla.
Negin guided the Bluejays to a 3-1 record, including a 1-1 mark against BIG EAST opponents, while posting a perfect 4-0 record at the No. 2 singles spot during Creighton's annual spring break trip to Orlando, Fla.
The Centennial, Colo. native opened the week with a quick 6-1, 6-1 straight-sets win over Cedarville's Abby Totten on Monday, before clinching the Bluejays' first BIG EAST victory of the season with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 straight-sets win over Seton Hall's Imogen Brooker on Tuesday.
Negin then claimed a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 three-set win over Villanova's Magge Gehrig on Wednesday afternoon, before closing out the perfect week with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Saint Joseph's Victoria Travey on Thursday. Overall, Negin has won five out of her last six singles matches after dropping six of her first seven singles matches of the season.
Earning their first BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week honors of the season, Negin and Shukla posted a perfect 4-0 record while surrendering just five games in four doubles matches at the top position this past week in Orlando.
The dynamic duo did not drop a single game in their first match of the week, claiming a 6-0 win over Cedarville's Totten and Diana Ivanikhina. Negin and Shukla then teamed up for a 6-1 win over Seton Hall's Aina Planta Ventosa and Anastasia Sereda to clinch the doubles point in the Bluejays' 5-2 victory over the Pirates.
In their tightest match of the week, Negin and Shukla once again clinched the doubles point for the Bluejays following a 6-4 win over Villanova's Ami Grace Dougah and Miriam Gondorova. The duo then closed out their week with a 6-0 triumph over Saint Joseph's Fabiana Tort-Umpierr and Victoria Tracey on Thursday to win their fifth straight doubles match at the top spot and improve to 6-1 on the season.
The Creighton women's tennis team will have a much-needed break before returning to the courts on Friday, March 22 at 2 p.m. in a match against Marquette in Milwaukee, Wis.
