NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. -- The Creighton men's tennis team battled but dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 60 St. John's in a BIG EAST matchup on Wednesday afternoon at the National Tennis Center in New York City.
The Bluejays fell to 7-6 on the year and 1-2 in BIG EAST play with the loss, while the Red Storm improved to 12-3 overall and 1-0 in league action.
The host Red Storm earned Wednesday's double point with a 6-3 win at the No. 1 doubles position and a 6-4 triumph at the No. 2 doubles spot.
St. John's then secured the overall dual win with a pair of three-set victories at the No. 4 and No. 5 singles positions, as well as straight-sets wins at the No. 1 and No 6 spots. Junior Alejandro Gandini won his first set, 6-1 at the No. 4 singles position, before falling 6-2 in the second and 6-1 in the third.
Senior Shin Inoue posted a 6-3 win in his first set at the No. 5 singles position, but similar to Gandini, Inoue dropped his second set, 6-1, and the decisive third frame, 6-2.
Sophomores Kirtan Patel and Zachary Kuo earned Creighton's only wins of the afternoon, claiming victories on the No. 2 and No. 3 singles courts. Patel overcame a one-set deficit to capture a 5-7, 6-1, 10-8 win on the No. 2 singles court, while Kuo battled his way to a 7-6, 7-6 victory at the No. 3 singles spot.
"We played much, much better today than we did on Monday against Georgetown," said head coach Gerhard Posch. "Things are looking up and we're excited to attack our match against Temple on Saturday."
Creighton returns to the court on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. when we take on Temple in Annapolis, Md.
