Omaha, Neb. -- Continuing an early trend, Creighton Baseball scored early and often in the Bluejays 9-5 win over Portland on Saturday, March 9.
The victory moved Creighton to 10-1 on the season, while Portland fell to 7-4.
Down 1-0 coming to the plate in the bottom of the first, junior Teddy Deters knotted the game at 1-1 with an RBI double to left center.
One inning later Creighton exploded for four runs on three hits. Matt Scherrman got things started with a leadoff walk, then with one out freshman Connor Capece laced an RBI double down the left field line to give the Bluejays a 2-1 lead. After a wild pitch and a walk gave Creighton runners at the corner, sophomore Tate Gillen and junior Nate Sailors blasted back-to-back doubles to make it a 5-1 game, highlighted by Sailors two-run double.
Holding a 6-2 advantage entering the sixth inning the Bluejays put the game away with three runs on a pair of hits and an error. Capece opened the sixth with a double, then an error on a sacrifice bunt from Kyle Hess gave the Bluejays a 7-2 edge. Gillen followed with an RBI through the left side and Ben North added a sacrifice fly to center.
Creighton starter Dominic Cancellieri collected the win (3-0), limiting the Pilots to two runs on seven hits over six innings. Dominic was excellent on Saturday, needing just 82 pitches to notch 18 outs.
