STORRS, Conn. – The Creighton softball team fell in the series finale to UConn, 7-0, on Sunday, April 14 at Burrill Family Field in Storrs, Conn.
The loss drops the Bluejays to 25-18 on the season and 9-6 in BIG EAST play, while UConn climbed to 22-19 overall and 10-5 in league action.
UConn surged out to a 1-0 lead with a two-out RBI single from Hope Jenkins in the bottom of the first inning.
The Huskies advantage grew to 4-0 in the third, chasing Bluejay reliever Kenzie Schopfer as Jana Sanden lined an RBI single up the middle to make the score 2-0, before Jenkins lifted a two-run home run on the very next pitch left field to give the Huskies a 4-0 edge in the contest.
After a pair of scoreless frames from sophomore Natalia Puchino in the circle, Creighton threatened to cut into the deficit in the top of sixth, loading the bases on back-to-back singles from Ella Dalton and Emma Rosonke as well as a walk from Erika Perez. However, an inning-ending groundout kept the Bluejays off the scoreboard.
UConn would take advantage of the Bluejays scoreless half inning by extending their lead out to 7-0 courtesy of a three-run home run to center from Lexi Hastings.
The Bluejays managed seven hits in the contests, led by a pair of base knocks by both senior Cayla Nielsen and Dalton. Senior Madeline Vejvoda also reached base three times, recording a hit and two walks. Senior Jena Lawrence (2-4) suffered the loss, allowing one run on two hits in 2.0 innings of work.
Creighton returns to the diamond on Tuesday, April 16 when the Bluejays close out non-conference play against crosstown rival Omaha at 5 p.m. from the Creighton Sports Complex.
