Creighton place sixth overall at league championship
OKATIE, S.C. -- A top 10 finish by freshman Annie Dawson helped the Creighton women's golf team to a sixth-place finish at the BIG EAST Championship, Presented by JEEP, on Monday.
Dawson opened with a 74 and followed that with a 1-under 71 before closing with an 80 in Monday's final round to tie for 10th place. It's the fifth straight BIG EAST Championship that Creighton has had at least one Bluejay finish in the Top 10, and the second Top 10 finish of the Phoenix, Ariz., native's freshman campaign.
Eleanor Hudepohl compiled circuits of 77, 75 and 80 for a 232 total that was good for 17th place. The junior from Cincinnati, Ohio, ended the season leading CU with a 76.91 scoring average.
Sophomore Annika Yturralde tied for 19th place following scores of 77, 79 and 80 for a 236 aggregate.
Additionally, freshman Katharine Marshall finished 25th after loops of 80, 79 and 85 for a 244 total.
Freshman Karsen Morrison shot an 85 in Saturday's first round before being replaced by classmate Abby Aeschleman, who shot 83 and 87 on Sunday and Monday.
Xavier (292-288-301=881) won its fifth straight title with a two shot victory over Georgetown (297-285-301=883). Creighton (308-304-325=937) entered the final day in fourth place, only to drop to sixth after being surpassed by Butler (299-316-310=925) and St. John's (318-300-307=925) on the final 18 holes of the tournament. Xavier's Emma Welch (71-66-76=213), who shot a championship-record 66 on Sunday, won medalist honors by two strokes over Georgetown's Morgan Smith (73-70-72=215). The tournament featured six teams and 33 competitors.
The tournament was played at Callawassie Island Golf Course, which measured 6,169 yards on its Par 72 layout.
The event was the final competition of the season for Creighton, which will return to the course in the fall.
