Omaha, Neb. -- In a midweek tussle that saw 19 different pitchers take the mound, Creighton Baseball outlasted North Dakota State 8-7 on Wednesday, April 3.
The win lifted Creighton to 22-4 on the season as the Bluejays collected their fifth consecutive victory, while North Dakota State fell to 7-17 in the first game for the Bison since March 24.
Teddy Deters got the Bluejays on the board in the second with a solo home run to left-center, then Creighton added a run in the frame on a productive out by Matt Scherrman to drive home Will MacLean.
The Bison stormed ahead with three runs in the fourth, but Creighton responded with four runs in the bottom half of the frame. The Bluejay tallies came on an RBI single from Nolan Sailors, a wild pitch that allowed Connor Capece to score with the bags full and a two-run single from Deters to give Creighton a 6-3 advantage.
North Dakota State, however, refused to yield pushing across two runs in the seventh to knot the game at 6-6. For the second time in the contest the Bluejay offense wasted no time with a response as Creighton reclaimed the lead with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Ben North got Creighton rolling with a lead off single through the right side, then Sam Vomhof battled back from a 1-2 count to work a walk. A sacrifice bunt from Hogan Helligso and a productive out by Tate Gillen put Creighton back on top, while Sailors connected on an RBI single to make it 8-6.
The Bison got one back in the eighth, but the Bluejays hung on for the victory.
Creighton reliever Parker Primeaux picked up the win (1-0), allowing one run on three hits in 1.1 innings. Jimmy Burke closed the game out for his first save with a scoreless ninth. Bison reliever Julien Hachem took the loss (0-1), allowing two runs on two hit and a walk in one inning of work.
