Omaha, Neb. -- Creighton Baseball dropped its BIG EAST opening game to Butler 5-1 on Friday, April 5.
The loss moved the Bluejays to 22-5 on the season and 0-1 in BIG EAST play, while Butler climbed to 13-14 overall and 1-0 in conference action.
Butler took a 2-0 lead in the fourth courtesy of a two-run home run to right from Kade Lewis.
The Bulldog advantage ballooned to 5-0 in the fifth as Carter Dorighi greeted reliever Shane Curtin with a two-run single to center and Jack Moroknek laced an RBI single to center later in the frame.
Creighton's tally came in the sixth as a walk to Nolan Sailors and a single by Nolan Clifford gave the Bluejays runners at the corners. Unfortunately, Clifford was doubled off on a line drive to center to quash Creighton's threat.
Pressed into a spot start, Creighton's Malakai Vetock was dominant for three innings, but gave up two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to suffer the loss, dropping to 2-1 on the season. Butler starter Tyler Banks limited Creighton to three hits in five innings to earn the win (2-4), while closer Cole Graverson worked the final 2.1 innings to collect his sixth save of the season.
