Bluejay Baseball Responds with 11-1 Defeat of Butler

Omaha, Neb. -- After dropping the series opener on Friday, Creighton Baseball delivered an emphatic response as the Bluejays defeated Butler 11-1 on Saturday, April 6.
The win lifted Creighton to 23-5 on the season and 1-1 in BIG EAST action, while Butler fell to 13-15 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.
Creighton got on the board in the bottom of the first as leadoff man Nolan Sailors worked a walk, moved into scoring position on a hit an run that retired Nolan Clifford, then scored on an RBI single by senior Jack Grace.
The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth when Creighton plated three runs on three hits and an error. Matt Scherrman got the inning rolling with a leadoff double. After a sacrifice bunt from Ben North moved Scherrman to third, Cuyler Zukowski lined an RBI double to right center. Creighton loaded the bags as Sailors was hit by a pitch, then Teddy Deters walked. With two down in the frame, Grace reached on an infield single to bring Zukowski in, while a throwing error on the play brought in Sailors to make it 4-0.
The Bluejays broke the game open with five runs on three hits and an error in the sixth. With one down Scherrman walked, then North was hit by a pitch. Zukowski took advantage with an RBI double down the left field line, then Sailors laced a two-run single to right. The final two runs of the frame crossed on an errant throw and an RBI ground out by Grace as the Bluejay edge grew to 9-0.
Creighton pushed two runs across in the eighth as Zukowski drove in Will MacLean with a single to left and Sailors delivered an RBI double to right to bring in Scherrman.
Bluejay starter Chad Saner earned his first win (1-0) with five shutout innings, while Bulldog starter Ben Whiteside fell to 1-1 with the loss. Whiteside allowed four runs on four hits in 4.1 innings.
Sailors and Zukowski each finished with three hits to lead the Creighton offense. Sailors went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI, while Zukowski was 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.
The Bluejays and Bulldogs play the rubber game of their series on Sunday, April 7 at 11:00 a.m.
