PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Creighton Softball team allowed just two hits, but both were home runs by Ally Jones as top-seeded Villanova upended the Bluejays, 4-1, in the BIG EAST Tournament Title Game on Saturday afternoon in Providence, R.I.
The Bluejays concluded their incredible season with a 36-22 overall record, recording the programs first 35-win season since 2010. Villanova improved to 31-22 on the year, claiming their third BIG EAST Conference title in the last four years and will represent the BIG EAST with the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Sophomore pitcher Natalia Puchino and junior outfielder Sydra Seville each earned recognition on the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team.
Puchino pitched a Championship-high 27 innings, striking out 12 with a 2.33 ERA, while Seville registered 7 hits (.467), including a home run, four runs and an RBI.
Jones headlined the victory for the Wildcats, launching a three-run home run in the top of the first inning to give Villanova an early 3-0 lead.
Creighton's lone run came in the bottom of the fifth inning as freshman Sydney Potter lined an RBI double into the right center field gap, scoring senior Elly Beeson from second.
In the sixth inning, the Jones registered another solo home run, pushing the Wildcats advantage to 4-1, before Caroline Pellicano closed the contest to pick up her ninth save of the season.
Villanova's Alyssa Seidler earned the win in the circle, tossing five innings and striking out six, while Puchino went the distance for the fourth time in the tournament, striking out three over seven innings of work.
NOTES: Cayla Nielsen (67), Madeline Vejvoda (61) and Lily West (60) became just the second trio in school history to record at least 60 hits each in a single season. The only other trio was Jody Ream, Sue Frederick and Karyn Rice in 1989 … Junior Sydra Seville extended her hit streak to 15 straight games, the longest by a Bluejay since Renae Sinkler-O'Gorman had a 17-game hit streak in 2008 … Recording two doubles on Saturday, Creighton ended the season with 77 doubles on the season, which tied for second most in a single season in program history ... With three strikeouts today, Natalia Puchino moved into tenth on Creighton's Career Strikeouts leaderboard … Senior Cayla Nielsen closed out her collegiate career ranked seventh in career batting average (.333), tied for fifth in career hits (209), fourth in career doubles (41), eighth in career total bases (313) and is the school record holder with 137 career runs scored.
