Baseball Sinks Pirates, 5-3

Omaha, Neb. -- Powered by a four-run fourth, Creighton Baseball bested Seton Hall 5-3 in the series opening game between the two squads on Thursday, May 16.
The win lifted Creighton to 34-16 on the season and 6-12 in BIG EAST play, while Seton Hall fell to 23-29 overall and 6-13 in conference.
Trailing 1-0 entering the fourth inning, Matt Scherrman got the offense rolling with a single off the leg of Seton Hall starter Jackson Balzan. One out later Nolan Clifford knotted the game at 1-1 with an RBI double to left-center. After a walk to Hogan Helligso, Ben North delivered an RBI single to left-center, then Kyle Hess lifted a two-run single to center to put the Bluejays up 4-1.
Creighton added an insurance run in the eighth as North laced an RBI double to center, plating Clifford. The duo guided the Bluejay offense with two hits each and a combined three runs scored as well as three RBI.
Reliever Malakai Vetock earned the win (4-2), tossing 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, while Seton Hall starter Jackson Balzan took the loss (2-1). Balzan was chased in the fourth, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks in 3.1 frames.
Game two of the series is slated for 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 17. The Bluejays will honor former player and coach Chris Gradoville before the game.
