Men's Soccer Takes to the Road to Face No. 18 Providence

Omaha, Neb. -- Creighton Men's Soccer returns to the road for the second time during the 2024 season as the Bluejays face No. 18 Providence on Saturday, September 28 in the second BIG EAST match for each squad. The Bluejays fell 1-0 to Georgetown in the conference opener on September 20 at home, while defeated No. 8 Seton Hall 1-0 at home on the same day.

The Bluejays and Friars have met 16 times, including eight times in Rhode Island. Creighton is 2-5-1 versus Providence on the road. Providence has won four of their last seven matches, while two others ended in a draw. Creighton's lone victory came in 2021 with a 2-1 win in Omaha. The last victory at Providence came in the BIG EAST Tournament during the 2016 season.

Scouting Creighton (4-2-2, 0-1-0 BIG EAST)
Following victories over Grand Canyon and Tulsa, Georgetown stripped the Bluejays of their third consecutive win and a victory in their BIG EAST home opener.
Debuting conference play from the comfort of home, Creighton surrendered the lone goal of the match 70 minutes into the battle, taking only their second loss of the season on a 1-0 result to the Hoyas.
Now, jetting off to Rhode Island to take on the No. 18 ranked Friars, the Bluejays are set to face a tough Friar squad who has fared well against Creighton teams in past years.
Since their first matchup in 2011, Creighton has posted a 2-5-1 road record, the Bluejays' most recent victory as visitors in Providence coming in November of 2016. In series history, the Bluejays have managed six total wins, paired with eight losses and two draws.
As a team, the Bluejays boast a diverse group of talent on all fronts. 21 different players have seen playing time this season, nine of them finding the back of the goal at least once in Creighton's eight matchups.
Manning the net for the Bluejays is Blake Gillingham. The junior is fresh off of two consecutive shutouts against Grand Canyon and Tulsa, while claiming a season average 0.667 save percentage, tallying 630 minutes and starting every one of Creighton's matches.
Scouting #18 Providence (6-2-1, 1-0-0 BIG EAST)
The No. 18 ranked Friars have found success on the pitch over the last several matches, claiming five victories in their last six contests. Heading into their second conference duel against the visiting Bluejays, the Friars have a three-game win streak against the likes of Bryant, No. 8 Seton Hall and, most recently, Brown.
Set to take on the Bluejays at home, the Friars performed well at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium so far this season, putting up a 4-1 record when surrounded by their home crowd. In those five home matches, the Friars have tallied a combined six goals.
Recording an average of 15.1 attempted shots per game throughout the season, Providence has seen 11 goals come to fruition in nine matches. Out of the double-digit goals scored this season, seven different Friars have contributed one or more goals.
Heading up the roster is Bruno Rosa, who found the back of the net twice this season, tallying three assists and leading the team with seven points. Close behind in point efficiency is Pepe Lora, whose three goals have yielded him six points on the season.
Between the posts for Providence, and the Friars' only goalkeeper with minutes this season, is Lukas Burns. Tallying a 0.781 save percentage and allowing just seven goals on the season, the goalkeeper has managed to keep most of the Friars' opponents at bay, allowing an average of 0.78 goals per game.
Time to Get Used to The Road
After opening the season with seven of eight matches in the friendly confines of Morrison Stadium, Creighton's will travel for four of its next five contests. Beginning at No. 18 Providence on Saturday, the Bluejays will face (RV) Missouri State in a neutral site match in Kansas City, then host DePaul. The following two contests send the Bluejays to road match with Omaha and finally against Xavier in Cincinnati on Oct. 12. Ironically Creighton's most complete match of the season was the 1-0 win at (RV) Grand Canyon on September 9.
Spreading Out the Offense
Though eight matches the Bluejays have delivered 15 goals, getting goals from 10 different players. Two additional Creighton players have at least one point via an assist. The three leading scorers are captain Jackson Castro (three goals and three assists) with nine points, two goals and three assists from Miguel Arilla and three goals from freshman Gavrilo Civric.
