OMAHA, Neb. – Creighton men's tennis junior Yuma Daijima and senior Alejandro Gandini earned the first BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week award of the season, the league announced on Monday afternoon.
Daijima and Gandini teamed up to guide the Bluejays to its first 2-0 record since 2015, while opening the season with a pair of victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles position. The pair of 7-0 sweeps marked the first time since at least 1988-89 that Creighton opened a season with back-to-back sweeps.
After posting an 11-3 record in doubles last season, Gandini and Daijima continued right where they left off, clinching the doubles point in the very first match of the 2025 season by capturing a 6-4 win over Saint Louis' Valentin Vasques and Riki Koshimizu at the No. 2 doubles position. The duo then quickly finished off Doane's Andre Hartman and Julio Avila, 6-0, at the top spot to give Creighton a 1-0 lead in their second match of the weekend.
This marked the second time Daijima and Gandini have earned BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week in their career, claiming the same honor on Jan. 29 last spring. It also marks the third BIG EAST weekly honor for Daijima in his career, as he also earned BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week on Feb. 2, 2024.
The Creighton men's tennis team returns to action this afternoon when they take on UNLV in Las Vegas at 2 p.m. CT.
