Bluejays have won 21 in a row over the Blue Demons
CHICAGO, Ill. -- The Creighton men's basketball team won its fourth straight game on Tuesday night with a 73-49 road win at DePaul. DePaul's 49 points tied the third-fewest allowed by Creighton in a league play since joining the BIG EAST in 2013.
The Bluejays are now 13-6 on the season and 6-2 in BIG EAST play, its best league start since its 2020-21 team that reached the Sweet 16. DePaul, which snapped a 39-game BIG EAST losing streak at Georgetown on Friday, saw its record fall to 10-10 overall and 1-8 in league action.
Creighton never trailed, scoring the first five points of the game and holding the Blue Demons without a field goal for the first five minutes of the contest. CU then used an 12-2 run that included seven points by Jamiya Neal to build a 23-9 lead. The Bluejays were led in the first half by 12 points and six rebounds by Neal as the Bluejays took a 31-19 advantage into the half. DePaul's 19 points scored were the fewest by a conference opponent in a Bluejay road game since Feb. 13, 2011 (Southern Illinois), which was in Greg McDermott's first year at Creighton.
A breakaway by dunk by Neal, four points by Ryan Kalkbrenner and a lay-up by Jasen Green helped Creighton open the second half on an 8-2 run and its largest lead of the game to that point at 39-21. CU's margin reached 23 (45-22) after a 6-0 spurt that included a Kalkbrenner slam and two baskets by Steven Ashworth.
Creighton led by as much as 28 (65-37 and 71-43) while cruising to its 21st consecutive victory over the Blue Demons.
Kalkbrenner finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots, while Neal led the Jays with 14 points. Creighton made 25-of-48 shots from the floor (52.1 percent) and made 14-of-18 two-point attempts after halftime. The Jays won the rebound battle 43-30 and outscored DePaul 36-28 in the paint.
DePaul was paced by 15 points from Layden Blocker. The Blue Demons entered the night as one of the nation's most prolific shooting three-point shooting teams but made just 1-of-18 to start the game and finished 3-of-23 overall from distance.
The Bluejays will return to the court on Saturday when it hosts Seton Hall at 12:30 p.m. in the program's annual Creighton vs. Cancer Pink Out.
