Women's Basketball Returns to the Road, Facing Providence on Saturday

Omaha, Neb. -- The BIG EAST season continues in earnest as the routine of facing conference foes sets in for Creighton Women's Basketball. The Bluejays play their third road BIG EAST contest at Providence on Saturday, January 4 at 1:00 p.m. (CT).

Scouting Providence (8-8, 1-2 BIG EAST)
Picked to finish third in the BIG EAST this season, Providence's season thus far has been a bit of a mixed bag. The Friars are 5-2 at home, but just 2-6 outside of Rhode Island. The last outing saw the Friars best St. John's 59-52 in overtime on January 1 to earn their first BIG EAST win of the season.
Providence has been stout all season long on defense, limiting opponents to under 60 points per game at 58.3. The Friars leading scorer is Grace Efosa at 15.5 ppg, while Olivia Olsen and Brynn Farrell each bring 8.0 ppg.
Although the Friars have been strong defensively, they have committed 18.4 turnovers per game this season on offense.
Scouting Creighton (11-3, 3-0 BIG EAST)
Creighton moved to 3-0 in BIG EAST action with a victory over Butler on Wednesday. The Bluejays raced out to an early 34-15 lead in the second quarter, but needed to hang on in the second half.
Lauren Jensen and Morgan Maly are the offensive leaders for Creighton with 18.5 and 17.4 ppg respectively. As a unit the team is averaging just under 75 points per game at 74.9 ppg.
Bluejays Looking for Just Second 4-0 Start to BIG EAST Play
Entering the game at Providence with three consecutive BIG EAST wins, the Bluejays will try for just the second 4-0 start during Creighton's tenure in the BIG EAST. The Bluejays opened conference play 7-0 during 2021-22, a season that ended in a run to the Elite Eight.

Bluejay fans topped 2,000 for the 11th time at a women's basketball game as 2,196 fans watched Creighton best Butler on January 1, 2025.
Earlier this season a program record was tied when 2,374 fans watched the Bluejays defeat #21 Nebraska 80-74.

Creighton Feeling a Little Like Rodney Dangerfield
Last season the Bluejays were 10-3 overall and 1-2 in BIG EAST play on January 6. The three losses came at home to Green Bay and #12 Connecticut as well as on the road at #19 Marquette. Creighton was ranked in seven of the first nine polls.
This season the Bluejays are 11-3 overall and 3-0 in BIG EAST action. The three losses have all come on away from home; at South Dakota State, at #10 Kansas State and in a neutral site game against #1 UCLA. Despite arguably a better resume this season the Bluejays have not returned to the national polls since the opening week.
Early Work By Maly Leads to Double-Double
Senior Morgan Maly was dominant in the first half of Creighton's 68-64 win over Butler on January 1. Maly torched Butler for 15 points and seven rebounds in the first half, finishing the game with 17 points and 10 rebounds for her eighth career
double-double.
Horan and Townsend Send the Bulldogs Walking Home
In a dog fight against the Butler Bulldogs, a pair of veterans lifted the Bluejays from the bench. Senior Jayme Horan and junior Kennedy Townsend delivered 15 of their 18 points in the second half to help Creighton hold off Butler.
After Creighton pushed its lead out to 19 at 34-15 in the second quarter the Bluejays held a 39-34 edge with 4:52 left in the third quarter. Townsend and Horan stopped the Bulldogs' charge with five consecutive points on a trey by Townsend, followed by a Horan steal and layup to put Creight back up by double digits.
