Men’s Tennis Narrowly Drops BIG EAST Opener to St. John’s, 4-3

OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton men's tennis team battled but dropped their BIG EAST Conference opener to St. John's, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at the Hanscom Tennis Center in Omaha, Neb.
The Bluejays fell to 7-2 on the year and 0-1 in league play, while the Red Storm improved to 9-0 overall and 3-0 in BIG EAST play, snapping the Bluejays five-match winning streak.
Creighton took the first point of the night, securing wins at the top two doubles positions. Senior Alejandro Gandini and junior Yuma Daijima won their fourth consecutive doubles match, claiming a 6-4 win at the No. 2 doubles spot, before senior Ethan Neil and freshman Rocky Mckenzie toughed out a 7-6 (7-4) victory at the top spot to give Creighton a 1-0 lead.
St. John's, however, answered with straight set victories on the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions to take a 3-1 advantage into the home stretch. The Red Storm's Danilo Raicevic captured a 6-3, 6-4 win on the No. 4 court, before Ryota Kaneda gave St. John's a 2-1 lead with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at the No. 6 singles spot.
SJU's Adam Groves followed with a 7-5, 6-2 win at the No. 5 singles court, before the Bluejays stormed back to level the match at 3-3 with wins on the top two singles court.
Gandini edged out a 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 win over Max Amling at the No. 1 singles spot, while Daijima claimed a 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 victory at the No. 2 singles position to tie the match at 3-3.
With the match on the line, St. John's Leonardo Mileikowsky rallied from a one-set deficit to clinch the match with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 three-set win to lifting the Red Storm to a 4-3 win.
The Bluejays return to action on Sunday morning for a 10 a.m. contest against Butler at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
