
Daijima & Gandini Sweep Men’s Tennis BIG EAST Weekly Awards

Daijima earns his second straight BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week honor
OMAHA, Neb. – Creighton men's tennis junior Yuma Daijima earned his second consecutive BIG EAST Male Singles Player of the Week award, while Daijima and senior Alejandro Gandini were named the BIG EAST Male Doubles Team of the Week, the league announced on Monday, Feb. 17.
Daijima has now been named BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week three times in his career. He has also teamed up with Gandini for three BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week honors, including their second acclaim this season.
Daijima went a perfect 2-0 in singles play this past week, guiding the Bluejays to a 1-1 record, including a 6-1 win over Butler on Sunday morning.
The reigning BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week continued his singles domination, taking down St. John's Carl Gustavsson on the No. 2 singles court on Saturday afternoon. The Tokyo, Japan native then clinched the match with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Butler's Riccardo Baldi on the No. 2 singles court to secure the Bluejays first BIG EAST win of the season.
In addition of his success on the singles court, Daijima posted a productive week of doubles play, claiming BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week with a pair of victories with Gandini at the No. 2 doubles position.
The duo topped the Johnnies' Carl Gustavsson and Danilo Raicevic, 6-4, on the No. 2 doubles court on Saturday, before picking up their fifth consecutive doubles win with a 6-3 victory over Butler's Riccardo Baldi and Arnesh Singh at the No. 2 doubles position.
Overall, Daijima and Gandini has recorded a 7-1 mark in doubles play, guiding the Bluejays to the doubles point in each of the past seven contests.
Daijima, Gandini and the rest of the Bluejays will return to the Hanscom Tennis Center on Saturday, Feb. 22 against crosstown rival Omaha at 6 p.m.
