OMAHA, Neb. – Batting constant showers and chilly temperatures, the Creighton softball team dropped its series finale with UConn, 8-0, in five innings on Saturday afternoon at the Creighton Sports Complex.
The Bluejays fell to 12-18 on the year and 2-7 in BIG EAST play with the loss, while the Huskies claimed the series and improved to 18-12 overall and 7-2 in league action with the win.
Carrying the momentum from game two, UConn quickly opened up an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Bluejay starter Brooklyn Patchen issued walks to five of the Huskies first seven batters.
The Huskies tacked on three addition runs in the top of the second as Kaitlyn Kibling and Grace Jenkins each drew walks to put runners on first and second with one away. Kaiea Higa then lofted a ball into shallow center, just passed the diving reach of Ella Dalton before rolling to the wall and allowing two-runs to score on the standup triple. Kaitlyn Breslin followed by delivered her 11th RBI of the weekend with a sacrifice fly to center to extend the Huskies lead to 5-0.
UConn continued to bring the heat at the plate offensively, building an 7-0 advantage on a two-run home run in the fourth from Higa, before an RBI single through the left side from Savannah Ring pushed the lead out to 8-0.
The Huskies' Payton Kinney closed the door on the Bluejays in the home half of the fifth to pick up her sixth win of the season. The graduate pitcher limited the Jays to just four hits and two walks in the complete-game shutout, while Higa lead the way offensively with a pair of hits and four RBI in the victory.
Four different Bluejays recorded a hit in the contest, while Patchen moved to 4-7 on the year allowing two runs on five walks in 0.2 innings of work. Senior Kenzie Schopfer provided 4.1 innings of relief, allowing six runs on four hits and five additional walks.
Creighton will return to action on Tuesday night as they host Omaha in the crosstown showdown at 6 p.m. at the CU Sports Complex.
