Softball Drops Pitcher’s Duel To Omaha, 3-2

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton softball team dropped a 3-2 pitcher's duel to Omaha on Tuesday night at the Creighton Sports Complex.
The Bluejay fell to 12-19 on the season with the loss, while the Mavericks improved to 23-9 overall.
Omaha's starter Maddia Groff earned her 14th win of the season, limiting the Bluejays to just one hit in 5.1 innings of work, while striking out nine. Senior Alexis Wiggins, a Creighton transfer, also provided 1.2 innings of relief allowing one run on two hits and a pair of walks.
CU got a pair of hits from redshirt freshman Kenzie Nakasawa, who drove in two runs on a home run and a single. Bluejay starter Kenzie Schopfer suffered the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on two hits and four walks in 2.1 innings pitched. Sophomore Brooklyn Patchen also recorded five strikeouts in 4.2 innings of scoreless relief.
The Mavericks placed the first dent on the scoreboard in the second, as Sammy Schmidt drew a six-pitch walk and Katherine Johnson blasted a two-run shot to straight away center to give Omaha a 2-0 lead.
Omaha would push their advantage out to 3-0 in the top of the third when Maggie O'Brien drew a walk and came around to score on a single from Rylinn Groff and a Bluejay fielding error.
The Bluejays would cut into the Mavericks lead in the bottom half of the third, as Nakasawa launching her second home run of the season over the centerfield wall to cutting the deficit to 3-1.
Creighton added a run in the home half of the fifth as graduate transfer Hannah Poole lined a double into the left center field gap, before Nakasawa delivered an RBI single into center to make the score 3-2.
Down to their final three outs, the Bluejays placed a runner on first with a walk to pinch-hitter Erika Perez before Groff induced a game-ending double play.
Creighton returns to BIG EAST play this weekend when they travel to the nation's capital to battle Georgetown in a three-game set.
