PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Despite a pair of home runs and three RBI from sophomore Kaelan Schultz, the Creighton softball team dropped the series finale to Providence, 5-4, on Sunday morning at Glay Field in Providence, R.I.
The Bluejays fell to 10-8 overall and 1-2 in league play with the loss, while the Friars improved to 4-13 overall and 2-1 in BIG EAST play this season.
Providence broke through and placed the first run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third innings as Gabriella Sebastian led off the frame with a double and Elisa Smith followed with a single and a stolen base to place runners on second and third with no outs. Emma Douma then delivered an RBI sacrifice fly to right, giving the Friars a 1-0 lead before a wild pitch allowed Smith to come in to score.
The Bluejays answered with a run of their own in the top half of the fourth when Schultz blasted her first career home run over the left center field wall cut the deficit to 2-1.
Schultz came through once again in the top of the sixth, launching a two-run shot to left center, her second home run of the day, to give the Jays their first lead of the game, 3-2.
Providence, however, plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh on one hit and four walks, including a bases loaded walk-off walk from Eichten to secure the 4-3 win for Providence.
Sophomore Brooke Shifflett suffered her second loss of the season, allowing two runs on two hit and five walks, while Tori Grifone earned the victory, striking out seven in 6.0 innings of work.
Schultz and senior Sydra Seville led the way offensively with a pair of hits, while Schultz drove in a career high three runs. Schultz is the first Bluejay with two home runs in a game since Cayla Nielsen had two blasts against UConn in 2024.
Creighton return to the field on Tuesday afternoon when they open the home portion of the schedule with a doubleheader against Drake. First pitch of game one between the Bluejays and Bulldogs is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. at the CU Sports Complex.
