Softball Splits Doubleheader with Drake Earning 500th Home Win

OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton softball team earned the programs 500th all-time home victory, salvaging a doubleheader split with Drake on Tuesday afternoon at the Creighton Sports Complex in Omaha, Neb.
The Bluejays dropped the home opener to the Bulldogs, 5-3, before capturing an 9-6 victory in game two.
With the split the Bluejays move to 11-9 on the year, while Drake was lifted to 7-14 overall.
GAME 1: Drake 5, Creighton 3
Drake wasted no time placing the first dent on the scoreboard, plating two runs in the top of the first inning on a two-run home run to left by Emma Dighton.
The Bluejays would quickly level the contest at 2-2 in the bottom of the second when sophomore Kaelan Schultz lined a double into the right center field gap before coming in to score on an infield single from Avery Barnard. Lynn Davis then reached on a fielder choice and stole second, before scoring on an RBI single to center from Ashten Pierson.
Drake would then score one run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to open up a 5-2 lead. Logan Kelley worked a bases loaded walk in the fifth, while Lydia Olejniczak recorded an RBI single to left and Ava Curry delivered an RBI groundout in the sixth to give the Bulldogs the three-run advantage.
Creighton countered with a run in the bottom of the sixth on a single from Hannah Poole, but it wasn't enough at Drake secured the 5-3 victory.
Drake's Molly Hoekstra earned her third win of the season, allowing three runs on two walks in the complete game effort.
Bluejay starter Kenzie Schopfer suffered the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks in 5.0 innings of work. Schultz continued her strong return to the field, going 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Bluejays offense.
GAME 2: Creighton 9, Drake 6
Similar to game one, Drake jumped out to an early lead, plating one run in the top of the first inning. Curry opened the game with a leadoff walk, before coming around to score the first run of the game on an RBI double down the left field line by Tatum Aragon.
Creighton responded with two runs in the bottom of the second to take their first lead of the ball game. Sydney Potter opened the frame with a single to left center and later scored on a three-base error by the Drake left fielder. Poole then took advantage of the defensive miscue, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Barnard to give Creighton a 2-1 lead.
Drake would level the contest at 2-2 in the top of the third on a double into the right center field gap by Kelley, before junior Lily West regained the lead with an RBI double in the bottom half of the inning.
The Bluejays would not trail again, scoring four addition runs in the fourth on an RBI single from Ella Dalton, a two-run single from Pierson and an RBI single from West to open up a 7-2 lead.
Creighton would tack on an insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on the first home run of the season from Poole, before Seville added in RBI single in the bottom half of the sixth to give the Jays a 9-2 advantage.
The seven-run cushion paid off as Drake plated four runs in the top seventh, before Brooklyn Patchen closed out the 9-6 victory for the Jays.
Freshman Abby Rusher picked up the first win of her collegiate career, allowing just one earned run with three strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work, while Patchen collected her first career save.
Dalton went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, while Seville and West each recorded two hits as Creighton collected a 13 total hits.
Creighton returns to the east coast this weekend for a three-game series against reigning BIG EAST Regular Season and Tournament champion Villanova.
